How often should I get a skin check?

It depends on your personal risk factors, such as family history, skin type, and time spent in the sun. For most people, a yearly skin check is recommended. If you have a history of skin cancer or higher risk, your GP may suggest more frequent checks. Some skin types may need less frequent checks or just need to report new or changing lesions.

Is there an age limit for skin checks?

No, there is no age limit. Skin cancer can affect people of all ages, so it’s important for both younger and older patients to be aware. If you notice any changes in your skin, or your child’s skin, it’s always a good idea to book a check, regardless of age.

What happens at a skin check?

During your appointment, your GP will examine your skin from head to toe in good light (underwear on). Some areas may need a dermatoscope (a special magnifying tool) to look more closely at any unusual spots, moles, or lesions. If anything suspicious is found, your doctor will discuss the next steps with you, which may include monitoring, further testing, or removal.

What should I wear at a skin check?

It’s best to wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be easily removed so your GP can check your whole body. You may be given a gown or cover sheet for privacy during the exam. Don’t worry, your doctor will ensure you feel comfortable and respected throughout the process. Please don’t wear makeup on the day of your appointment and two piece garments are generally more practical.
